The Mystery of the Exploding Bottle

Here’s a strange one. I picked up a couple of bottles of Dearfield Ale for my parents. Dearfield is a strawberry blonde ale made by Crabtree Brewing in Greeley, CO and only comes in 22oz bombers. Since they don’t drink beer too often, Ma and Pa stuck these bottles in the pantry. Fast forward a month or so, and we have this…

When the bottle broke, there was a loud pop followed by an explosion of beer all over the pantry. Can anyone explain to me why this would happen to a bottle of beer? I’d like to avoid it in the future.

Some more info on Dearfield Ale and the town it’s named after can be found here.

I would think that it was a weak or flawed bottle. Could have had a manufacturing defect where the glass wasn't thick enough around the bottom and when it broke the rest of it just fractured and came off.

It's amazing how almost perfect the break is.

And it is amazing what a terribly sticky mess it made!

This is why you should always drink bottled beer as quickly as possible…..and for that matter canned beer should be handled in the same manner just to be on the safe side.
